Now you can draw interest and excitement to reading with these fun grammar games designed for the child who is just
stretching past basic phonetic reading. The Function of Words work gives children a tangible impression of the jobs of different
words in phrases—grammar. But that is not all it does; it also instills in them an understanding of the
importance of word order
and, most importantly,
inspires them to practice reading words. This last point is often overlooked. This work is not advanced
work. It is specifically designed to ease the beginning reader into reading more and more words, phonetic and non-phonetic. It
is a critical step in gaining understanding of the meaning of words:
reading comprehension.

Function of Words activities draw interest to the act of reading—they make reading fun. Clinical research shows that when
people feel passionate about a subject matter, they can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in their path (Fink,
1998). For example, even people with severe dyslexia have gone on to become Nobel laureates because they were so
interested in their work. These fun, engaging grammar activities are tools to help you spark that early interest in the youngest
children.

Function of Words/Grammar Cards
Function of Words: Grammar
Lesson 1: The Article
The Article
This is the child's introduction to all of the grammar activities. It starts with the
basics: things (nouns) and words that tell us something about those things
(articles). The Article packet includes printed labels and photo cards for
twelve article phrases that help distinguish "a" from "the"; Each word and
photo is on its own separate label; Text for articles is light blue; Text for
nouns is black; Full-color photos.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 2: The Adjective Box 1
Adjective Box 1
We slowly increase complexity by introducing the adjective to our article
phrases. Now we are learning about words that tell what
kind of thing we're
talking about (adjectives). This is the first time we use the grammar symbols,
graphical representation of word function. The Adjective Box 1 packet
includes printed labels and photo cards for ten adjective phrases (the phrase
is on one card and a photo of the object it describes is on a separate card).
Text for adjectives is medium blue, all other text is black; Full-color photos.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 3 & 4: The Adjective Box 2 (Logical Adjective & Adjective Chain)
Now that the concept of adjective is known, children get a chance to play
with descriptions of things. First, they match nouns with single adjectives to
see what works and what doesn't. Then they match a single noun with a
string of adjectives...to make some very interesting phrases! The Adjective
Box 2 packet includes ten nouns (text is black) and ten adjectives (text is
blue) that correspond to at least one of the nouns.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 5: The Conjunction
The Conjunction
This simple lesson demonstrates how the conjunction connects things. The
Conjunction packet includes printed labels for phrases of objects you can find
in your classroom that students can "tie" together with the pink ribbon to
concretely present the function of the conjunction in tying phrases together;
Text for conjunctions is pink, all other text is black; Pink ribbon included!
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 6: The Preposition
This mischievous activity teaches students about the job of a preposition by
moving objects about in response to
which preposition they use. Very fun!
The Preposition packet includes printed word cards for several different
prepositions and prepositions is green, all other text is black.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 7: The Verb Box 1 (Introduction)
Verb Box 1
Here's your chance to play a joke on the children! Give them one of the printed
word cards and ask them to give you what it says. When they can't give you
the "bark," they realize that some words are intangible actions. The Verb Box
1 packet includes printed word cards for three verbs and six nouns. Text for
verbs is red; Text for nouns is black.
Laminated:   $7.95

Lesson 8: The Verb Box 2 (Charades)
Once children understand the difference between a verb and a noun, they
are ready to play with the meaning of verbs! Each child chooses a card and
acts out the action it describes. They're friends guess what they are doing.
This is a foundational work for reading comprehension. The Verb Box 2
packet includes printed word cards for ten verbs. Text is red.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 9: The Adverb Box 1 (Charades)
This work takes the Verb Charades to the next level. Children read the verb
card and then read the adverb card to tell them
how to do the action. Hilarious!
The Adverb Box 1 packet includes printed word cards for ten verbs and ten
adverbs. Text for verbs is red; Text for adverbs is orange.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lessons 10 & 11: The Adverb Box 2 (Logical Adverb & Adverb Chain)
Just like with the Adjective, we show the children how to link a single verb
with a single adverb to make an interesting action (logical adverb) and then
how to entwine one verb with several adverbs (adverb chain). The Adverb
Box 2 packet includes printed word cards for ten verbs and ten adverbs. Text
for verbs is red; Text for adverbs is orange.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 12: The Verb Box 3 (Transitive & Intransitive)
We're ready now for mixed phrases combining actions and objects. First we
learn about direct objects: a transitive verb takes a direct object (I read the
book) while an intransitive verb does not (I read). The Verb Box 3 packet

includes six printed phrase cards where the verb takes a direct object and six
word cards where it does not. All text is black.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 13: The Verb Box 4 (Syntax)
All along, children have been playing with the order of words. They've and
that adverbs can come before or after a verb. Now they'll get to see for
themselves that the order of words is so important, it can change the meaning
of a phrase! For example, if we rearrange "cut the paper" we can change it to
"the cut paper." What a difference! The Verb Box 4 packet includes six printed
phrase cards where the verb changes its function when the order of words
is changed. All text is black.
Laminated:   $7.95
Lesson 14: The Verb Box 5 (Mental Activity)
So far, children have been able to act out the words they've worked with.
Now, the action is invisible! But just like running, thinking/mental activity is hard
work! The Verb Box 5 packet includes eight verb phrases that indicate a
mental activity rather than a physical one. All text is black.

Lesson 15: Command Box 1 (Two Actions)
These command games let children work independently alone or with a friend.
They read a card, do what it says, and then symbolize the phrase. The
phrases include two action verbs and a conjunction. All text is black.

Command Box 1
Lesson 16: Command Box 2 (Two Actions/One Object)
As we slowly increase complexity, this activity combines two actions with an
object. Children read a card, do what it says, and then symbolize the phrase.
The Command Box 2 packet includes ten phrases made up of two actions and
one object. All text is black
Laminated:   $7.95

Lesson 17: Command Box 3 (Two Actions/Two Objects)
One step more challenging, this activity combines two actions with two
objects. Children read a card, do what it says, and then symbolize the phrase.
The Command Box 3 packet includes ten phrases made up of two actions and
two objects. All text is black.
Laminated:   $7.95
Command Box 3
Lesson 18: Command Box 4 (Two Actions/Two Objects/One Pronoun)
Here we pull it all together and add in a new concept: a pronoun. Each
command includes two actions with two objects but instead of a typical
article, it uses a pronoun. Children read a card, do what it says, and then
symbolize the phrase. The Command Box 4 packet includes ten phrases made
up of two actions, two objects, and one pronoun. All text is black.
