Like The Joyful Child (see above), this book started out as a catalog and it has become one of the
most trusted references for parents and teachers alike. The top half of each page contains a running
dialogue on child development. The bottom half of each page presents products you can purchase
relevant to the discussion. So yes, it is a catalog, but no, it is not like any catalog you have ever seen
before. If an electronic copy is all you need, you can download one for free at
www.michaelolaf.com/CWcontents.html. If you'd like the hard copy, you can order it here or directly
from Michael Olaf. The cost is used to cover printing. Contents are divided by age. For 3-6 years there
are sections on Balance, Food, Toys, Games, the Earth, Plants, Animals, People, Music, Art,
Language, and Math. For 6-12 years there is an introduction and sections on the Earth,
Plants/Animals, History, Arts, Language, and Math. For 3-12 years there is a section on preparing the
Learning Environment and a section for Parents/Teachers.

This will become one of your most trusted reference books. I highly recommend it and have
purchased many of the products for my own children. It is truly an essential parenting aid and the
products offered are created by responsible businesses with the child's true interest at heart.

Here's what Angeline Lillard (author of
Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius) has to say about
this book:
This book provides a clear introduction to Montessori and has gathered together for purchase
an excellent array of materials to implement Montessori philosophy in the home and
classroom. A great resource for the Montessori parent or teacher.
Language Lessons Audio CD
Language Lessons: Montessori-based Literacy Presentations for the Young Child by Julia Volkman
Language Audio CD:  $9.95
This series of talks provides an overview of the basic theory behind the language program in the 3-6
Montessori classroom and specific instructions on how to present language lessons, including
www.maitrilearning.com/downloads or you can order a CD here. 1 hour and 20 minutes of lecture.

Lectures include general guidelines for giving Montessori presentations, an overview of the primary
learning events that prepare the child for reading (a reading road map), and specific step-by-step
presentations for vocabulary building, sorting activities, playing "I spy," matching games, and using
3-part card materials for phonetic reading, early whole language reading activities, teaching
zoology/taxonomy, and presenting external anatomy via the "parts of" cards. Step-by-step instructions
for using multi-part definition cards (word puzzles) and for teaching foreign languages with 3-part
cards are also included.

Note: Before a child can become a true master of our language, s/he he needs self-confidence, an
organized mind, a knowledge (internal dictionary) of words, endless opportunities to practice
speaking/using words, phonetic awareness (knowledge of the sounds/symbols in our language),
endless opportunities to create/write words, and the desire to write/read. The complete Montessori
3-6 curriculum directly meets each of these needs of the child.
The information presented in these
talks will be most effective only when the rest of the Montessori curriculum is being implemented.
Specifically, if you are observing disorder in the child's ability to master our language, your first
remedy is to address the disorder in the child's environment
(both the physical space and his/her
routines). Organizing the child's space and routines is a rich art that is an integrated part of the
Montessori 3-6 practical life/everyday living curriculum (which includes specific lessons on caring for
the self, caring for the child's environment, learning gracious/courteous behavior, and mastering
motor skills (control of movement).
