Article: Calf or pup?

Calf or pup?

Question:

I recently was gifted your word study card set. I am wondering why the animal adult/young group has the match of a seal and calf. Isn’t the young of a seal a pup? The young of the walrus is named a calf.

Answer:

Thank you for noticing this! We love your human tendency for precision.

It's true that seal young are commonly known as pups. Curiously, the term seal also refers broadly to all pinnipeds which include seals and walruses. Thus, pinniped young can be known as pups or calves.

That said, we think pup is a more accurate term and will be changing our materials going forward. We are happy to send you replacement cards. If you'd like them, just contact us and we'll send them out.
Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. It definitely takes a village!
