Reading through the Lens of Neuroscience

We are so excited to announce that Julia is presenting as part of the Montessori and the Science of Reading P2P Summit! The summit will take place from June 19-21 but registering also gives you online access for one year so don't worry if you'll be at the beach those days.

P2P is short for Principles to Practice. This is a program that Tammy Oesting of ClassrooMechanics and Seemi Abdullah of Trillium Montessori started in 2020 to bring affordable professional development to Montessorians around the world. Check out their site for details and to see all the offerings from this team.

Here's what you can look forward to in Julia's talk.

Reading through the Lens of Neuroscience

Children learn to speak just by being exposed to language. But the same cannot be said for learning to read. To read, we must repurpose part of the brain designed to identify faces so it can identify letters. We have to teach the brain to read. This talk looks at common sense strategies that support the development of reading based on what the brain naturally wants to do. After listening to this talk, learners will:

  • Understand the big picture of how the brain learns to read
  • Identify common sense strategies that support literacy in the brain
  • Be able to explain the neurodevelopment of language (scary concept) in simple, everyday terms (completely accessible)
