Montessori phonogram lists give students lots of words that share one phonogram, all on a single card. Each card shows a key picture and 12 words with the same phonogram, like ai in snail or ou in cloud. Students read the list and notice the sound all the words share. Then they turn the card over and build as many words as they can remember with the movable alphabet, chalkboards, or pencil and paper (whatever is appropriate for that child). When they're done, the list becomes their control, so they can check their own spelling.

Why do phonogram lists matter for reading and spelling?
When students see 12 words that share one phonogram, the pattern jumps out at them. Reading the words builds decoding skills. Writing them from memory with the movable alphabet builds spelling skills. Each skill strengthens the other. Because the list works as a control, students can find and fix their own spelling errors. No teacher correction required.
How do you use phonogram lists?
The student chooses a list, reads the words on their own or with a friend, and notices the phonogram they all share. Then the student turns the card over and builds as many words as they can remember with the movable alphabet. Or, if working in pairs, one student dictates a word while the other writes it down. Finally, they use the card to check and correct their spelling.
What ages is this for?
Typically ages 4 to 7, once a student is reading words with phonograms. The lists also work well for older students who need spelling or phonics practice, English learners, and intervention settings.
Which option should I choose?
Group 1 covers the traditional phonograms most students learn first. Group 2 adds other common phonograms, including silent e words and phonograms with more than one sound. The set includes both groups, all 38 lists.
